Andrew "Dru" Barnes

Picture this.

  • You go to your friend’s house to hang out
  • You leave their house to head home
  • You accidentally walk in the wrong direction
  • Realize your error and turn back
  • When you turn around you’re confronted and attacked by a “hammer wielding maniac”
  • You loose your eye

Sounds drastic but this actually happened to a Jamaican artiste based in the U.S.

Here’s what went down.

Jamaica native Andrew “Dru” Barnes of the alternative reggaeton band JOGYO, was attacked earlier this week by a “crazed man”.  His friends say he might loose his eye.

Barnes’ friend Gerrit Vooren wrote on a Facebook page entitled “Dru Barns Healing Page: “To be honest, having been hit in the head with a hammer, it’s a miracle Dru is alive, and even more so that there’s no brain damage at all. But there’s bad news as well. Although his right eye is in perfect shape, Dru is going to loose his left eye. The damage was too severe to repair it. Too many parts of his eye were severed.”

This is what the DailyNews posted:

“Barnes had just left Vooren’s home in Bedford-Stuyvesant at about 11 a.m. last Thursday and was on his way to Fort Greene when he got lost, friends said.

He ended up on Jefferson Ave. near Howard Ave. where police said the unidentified assailant jumped him and repeatedly struck him with the hammer.”

Following up on the facebook post which was made 14th July, police have in their possession, a sketched drawing of the alleged attacker along with video footage of him fleeing the scene.
