I name Baccanal! Not the hit Soca track sung by Destra Garcia a couple years ago but its the only possible expression to conclude the following story. As i opened the Wednesday Express i was amazed to see the following article.
Lawyers representing President Anthony Carmona have sent a pre-action protocol letter to comedian Rachel Price requesting she cease and desist from discussing the attire of his wife, Reema Carmona. More here:http://bit.ly/1t4R1gA
This brought the question of freedom of speech to the front burner, so upon further investigation i stumbled upon this.
Freedom of speech definition: The right to speak without censorship or restraint by the government. Freedom of speech is protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution.
With the above definition in mind would the President of Trinidad and Tobago be wrong in his decision to address Miss Price in such a legal manner. One would think that such a highly educated individual would not entertain such minor hindrances. Even the US President and his wife were and continue to be subjects of comedy skits so this should be nothing new for individuals in authority to be dealing with.
Which brings me to another point that is classed as cyber bullying.
Cyberbullying is the use of information technology to repeatedly harm or harass other people in a deliberate manner. According to U.S. Legal Definitions, Cyber-bullying could be limited to posting rumors or gossips about a person in the internet bringing about hatred in other’s minds; or it may go to the extent of personally identifying victims and publishing materials severely defaming and humiliating them
This bit of information made me question both President Carmona and Ms Price even more. Firstly the problem of cyber bullying is real and one of the fastest growing online trends. What is startling is the fact that most individuals who engage in the cyber bullying practice don’t even realize they are doing it.
In Conclusion, the situation could have been handled in a different manner. Both Mr President and Ms Price could have dealt with the matter in a private manner.
In other news.
A man walked out of a police holding cell in Piarco.
British citizen Robert Hastings, who escaped from a holding cell at the Piarco Police Station on Sunday morning, is still at large.
Hastings, 47, walked out of the police station less than 24 hours, after he was detained at the Piarco International Airport on Saturday when 2 kilograms of cocaine, worth TT$800,000, was found in the lining of his suitcase.
He was kept in a holding cell in which the key was stuck in the lock for several days. Apparently he just pushed his hand through the bars, opened the door and walked out of the police station.
Seriously, please excuse my sarcasm but how could something like this happen. This was not even a local individual. it just goes to show how much respect persons have for our country. Now we all know accidents happen but if this was a murderer or rapist would it have been swept under the carpet or dealt with as a matter of urgency. Come on people wake up, we are too comfortable this is a serious matter and needs more attention. But you must admit, that guy has pretty big balls to pull that one off.
